Life-long Stratford resident, Joseph Gresko announced his candidacy for the 121st District, in front of a room packed with Democrats, accompanied by Terry Backer’s sons Jake and Luke on December 22.

Gresko, recently elected as the Town Council representative from the Fifth District told the crowd that he was eager to follow in Representative Backer’s footsteps. “I acted as Communication’s Coordinator for Terry for four years, as well 11 other State Representatives. Terry was a friend and a role mode,” Gresko said. “Everyone should know I plan to continue Terry’s important work for a healthy environment and a healthy Long Island Sound up at the State Capitol.”

A special election to fill the vacancy in the 121st House District will be held Feb. 2, the day before the opening of the General Assembly's 2016 session.

Gresko is a former radio reporter at WICC in Bridgeport. He was the communication manager for the city of Bridgeport before joining the House Democratic staff in Hartford more than a decade ago. Gresko, a graduate of Stratford High as well as Central State University with a degree in Environmental Science, met Backer and interviewed him when Backer was named a “Soundkeeper”. Gresko was then with radio station WICC, a job he held for 11 years. “It was the beginning of a 25-year relationship.” Gresko went on to become the official spokesperson for the city of Bridgeport, before his move to his Communications Coordinator in Hartford. In that role, Gresko wrote Press Releases and Social Media for the 11 representatives while keeping them briefed on new policy developments within the Legislature. Gresko is also an auxiliary member of Stratford’s VFW.

“People in Lordship and the South End should know that Joe’s work in Hartford will focus on the needs of his constituency as well as the environment,” announced Len Petrucelli, Chair of the Democratic Town Committee. “Joe was a member of Stratford’s Conservation Commission and our Inland/Wetlands Commission and it is with pride that Democrats present him as our candidate for the 121st District.”

“I wholeheartedly endorse Joe Gresko’s run for State Representative. “said Beth Daponte, chair of Stratford’s Town Council  “He has deep experience working with Terry Backer B on environmental and conservation issues. And as a staff member for the State House of Representatives, he has the knowledge and experience to hit the ground running and be an effective representative for the 121st District. He has already worked collaboratively and bi-partisanly to assure that Stratford’s nonprofit community, especially the South End Community Center and Sterling House get the funding they deserve from the State.”
